The Great Commission

Matthew's Account- “Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.” (Matthew 28:16-20)

Mark’s Account- “And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” (Mark 16:15-18)

Luke’s Account- “Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things. Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24:44-49)

John’s Account- “Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (John 20:19-23)

As disciples of Jesus Christ we are all called to share the Gospel with others as the Holy Spirit leads us. The truth is many think that if they are not called into the Apostolic leadership role then they have no call from the Lord. This is a false idea. The truth is we are graced and called to become Christlike in the sphere Jesus has given us. Whether that be as parents to our children, in government, in the school system, in the marketplace, or as a leader within the Body of Christ.

Peter says, "Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong!" (1 Peter 3:15-17)

Through maturity one grows in grace and many times the Lord will appoint someone to a position of greater responsibility. Scripture even says to desire it is a good thing, "This is a trustworthy saying: “If someone aspires to be a church leader, he desires an honorable position." (1 Timothy 3:1). However this is not something done quickly or with someone new to the Body of Christ, as verse six of 1 Timothy says "A church leader must not be a new believer, because he might become proud, and the devil would cause him to fall." Again Paul emphasizes this in his first letter to Timothy, "Never be in a hurry about appointing a church leader. Do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure." (1 Timothy 5:22)

The dangerous thing is when someone self appoints themselves, when Jesus has not. What they do or try to build will be completely up to them and is not backed by Jesus. The primary focus is to walk with the Lord, yielding to Him, becoming like Him, and let Him set the sphere of influence. Be thankful for whatever He calls you to steward and share the Good News of Jesus as the Holy Spirit leads you!

Above all, don't just tell people of Jesus, let them see Him in you!!!
