Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.” (John‬ ‭13‬:‭26‬)

During this time this was an act of great friendship and intimacy. To share choice bits of food with a friend, and this reveals the genuine love of Jesus!

Even though betrayal was already in Judas’ heart Jesus still loved him the same. It makes you wonder how anyone could accept this gift of friendship and still hold onto treachery and betrayal (unrepented sin).

I believe Jesus, the one greater than Solomon, was showing us what Solomon says here, “If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, And the Lord will reward you.” (Proverbs 25:21-22)

Judas did not allow the washing of his feet to lead him to repentance and so ate the bread in an unworthy manner, sound familiar?

Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.” (1 Corinthians‬ ‭11‬:‭27‬-‭30‬)

Communion is a wonderful time of fellowship at the Lords table, yet we must enter with reverential awe, as well as answer the call to genuine self reflection! It should not be done flippantly or in a speedy fashion!
